What to Look for in a Luxury Home

Everyone has a different definition of what a luxury home is. Some home buyers may think a beautifully landscaped backyard with a pool. Others think of a home with a movie theatre and bowling alley. Every client is different. Some may value their outdoor space just as much as the interior of their home. One common element is that a luxury home has to offer something unique, and there are several items that are becoming must-haves on the luxury home buyer's list of requirements.

If you’re an entertainer, a fully enclosed wine cellar will be at the top of your list. A great cellar is built and designed to showcase a great collection of wines in a room where the owner can control the temperature settings separately from other areas of the house. In past years, they were built in basements but modern architecture is bridging the gap and making it possible to add a wine cellar to the main level - making it ideal for entertaining.

If you are more interested in a high end visual appeal it’s the finishes of a home that truly make it stand out as unique. Hardwood flooring, granite in the kitchens and bathrooms or travertine, coffered ceilings, crown molding, oversized baseboards, wainscoting can all definitely add that wow factor to any home. It’s a common phrase in the industry that kitchens and bathrooms sell homes, which is quite accurate in the luxury home market. Most buyers are looking for a home with beautiful custom kitchens and bathrooms that appeal to their tastes and are both functional and stylish.

In the Toronto area, many homes on a higher elevation are preferred for their view of the city. A view is something that cannot be manufactured or built, unlike a kitchen or bathroom, and will never go out of style. Homes that have a view hold their value and are always a desirable feature for prospective buyers.

Another feature that is becoming common are media rooms to enjoy a movie or sporting match on the big screen. The perfect media room will have great seating, surround sound and a top of the line projector system. They are great for entertaining or spending a relaxing weekend at home.
