The Distillery District is one of Toronto's most well-preserved historical neighbourhoods. Over the last few years, this area has completely re-invented itself and has become one of the city's favorite entertainment hot spots. Dozens of exclusive boutiques, award-winning restaurants, and numerous cafés make the Distillery District an exciting place to visit and a vibrant location to live.
Located between the Gardiner Expressway and Front Street, just east of Parliament, the Distillery District has developed into a beautiful fusion of historic architecture and modern amenities. Because of its unique buildings, this neighbourhood is often utilized for film shoots. Some of the biggest blockbusters to showcase the area were Cinderella Man, Chicago, X-men, and Against the Ropes.
Toronto has a vibrant art scene that is proudly displayed in the Distillery District. Since 2003, many of the streets have been closed to vehicle traffic and allow pedestrian access only. This drew many art studios and galleries to the neighbourhood. Flower shops, jewellery stores, and independent furniture stores are just some of the specialty retailers that make shopping in the Distillery District a truly unique experience.
If you have been planning on checking out this vibrant neighbourhood for the first time, or need an excuse to pay another visit, there is no shortage of local events to make it worth your while. The Distillery Sunday Market takes place every Sunday from June until September. Vendors from all over the GTA set up booths with local produce, handmade soaps and artisan cheeses. For the authentic distillery experience, be sure to check out the Sake Brewery Tour. The Ontario Spring Water Sake company is offering tasting tours every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.
